This group of three dragonflies has close genetic ties to many of the palearctic species. It includes the Saffron-winged Meadowhawk (Sympetrum costiferum), the holarctic Black Meadowhawk (Sympetrum danae), and the Band-winged Meadowhawk (Sympetrum semicinctum). The later two species are closely related.
The coloration of the Band-winged Meadowhawk varies considerably across the continent from east to west. There exists some confusion about the status of these variations. Currently, there are three named subspecies--Sympetrum semicinctum fasciatum, S. s. californicum, and S. s. occidentale.
